The majority of animal feeds are obtained by granulation. Pelleting is the process of compressing or molding a material into pellets.
In addition to granulation, extrusion is also a widespread industrial process to produce products for animal feed.
Granulation
The process of pelletizing consists of forming very different feed compositions that are ground and mixed, sometimes in powder form, under the effect of temperature, humidity and pressure.
Different types of feeds can be produced by pelletizing:
- High grain content feeds (50-80% grain, 12-25% protein), high starch formulations
- Heat sensitive feeds containing sugar, milk powder and whey powder (5-25%)
- High natural protein supplements and concentrates (25-45%)
- Low protein foods (12-16%): have a small amount of grain, a large amount of coarse fiber. A small amount of moisture may be added during packaging.
- High urea (6-30%) and molasses (5-20%) feeds, they are difficult to extrude. Little or no steam is produced.
Extrusion
The principle is simple: ingredients are injected under pressure into a tube, stirred by one or two screws, and exit through a screen at the other end. Within this tube, during the mixing, it is possible to inject other ingredients and especially to proceed to the heating of the mixture.
