UPL big bag compactor case study

Reduction of big bag waste and elimination of dust

Products: herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, seed treatment

Objective: Reduce big bag waste volume and contain residual dust for operator safety

Client: UPL is a leader in global food systems, offering an integrated portfolio of sustainable agriculture solutions -- from seed decisions to post-harvest. As one of the top five agriculture solutions companies worldwide, UPL's portfolio consists of both patented and post-patent crop protection solutions to help farmers nurture and protect their crops.

In order to maintain a safe and clean working environment, UPL LTD and Palamatic Process partnered on the project involving the CBB125 Big Bag Compactor unit. Our client regularly uses big bags to unload raw materials for the production of agricultural chemicals including: herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and seed treatment. Because of the nature of these materials, our client has to take great care to eliminate dust and operator exposure in the process facility. The CBB125 big bag compactor helps reduce the volume of waste and contain any residual dusty material that is left over from the super sack unloading process. The unit can be a stand-alone solution or fully integrated into big bag unloading stations. Utilizing an over-sized auger, big bags are fed into the collection hopper and compressed into the compaction outlet tube.

A polyethylene sheath is fitted to the outlet tube via tensioning rings which cause the big bags to build up and compact against the sheath. As more big bags are fed into the collection hopper and pushed into the compaction tube, the poly sheath gives way allowing a range of 3-7 bulk bags per meter of sheath. Our production office can include a connection port to an existing central dust network, or integrate a small independent filter on the compactor.

Fred Cuttino, maintenance manager, says “the unit is up and running for full time production and it is working great!”

Palamatic Process offers a range of modifications for the FIBC compactor including:

  • Mobile unit via forklift / casters
  • Carbon / 304 / 316 stainless steel fabrication
  • Washdown compatibility
