Big bag filling with ashes

Processed products: fly ashes and ash embers

Refiom processing line

The client is a household waste incineration plant.

Objective: Bulk bag filling equipment with a required fill rate of 2 bulk bags/hr. for ash material to transport to municipal land fill. The ash byproduct of household waste incineration is also called REFIOM: residues from the purification of household waste incineration fumes.

Solution: The FlowMatic® 02 bulk bag filling station with an integrated buffer hopper for storage prior to packaging.
The integrated buffer hopper provides sufficient storage time to minimize the risk of hot ashes being stored in bulk bags. This option allows the plant operator to use standard bulk bags for long term cost savings. The rotary valve under the buffer hopper provides a controlled and metered dosing into the filling equipment.

The filling operation of the bulk bag is controlled by a microwave sensor. This sensor technology was substituted in place of the usual standard load cells due to their reliability in harsher and more extreme industrial environments. The microwave sensors technology for bulk bag level control do not come into contact with the ash material and therefore avoid risk of breakage or overload. The pre-inflation fan, which is a standard feature on most Palamatic Process bulk bag packaging systems, allows the bag to be shaped for optimal filling in regards to the low density ash material. Furthermore, due to the low density nature of this material, the Palamatic Process design office integrated a vibrating table which provides the densification of the fly ash.
A more robust design also needed to be utilized due to the abrasive nature of the material (fly ash = pure silica) including an increased metal sheet thickness and abrasion resistant coatings.
Since the bulk bags were intended for the land fill, the operator has no need for handling pallets. As a result, the station integrates "U" forks which allows the bulk bag to be removed by the handles (straps) via forklift. This equipment can also be provided with a central hook for the packaging of single-handle bulk bags.
